Mexico announces the Generation Equality Forum confirmed dates

The Forum will take place in Mexico City in March 2021

The activities will continue in Paris, France, in June 2021

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Institute of Women announce that the launch of the Generation Equality Forum, postponed due to the COVID 19 pandemic crisis, will take place from March 29 to 31, 2021 in Mexico City.

The Governments of Mexico and France announced, in the framework of the 74th United Nations General Assembly, their intention to hold in 2020 the Generation Equality Forum, a global process convened by UN Women, under the leadership of civil society, in favor of gender equality. However, derived from the global health emergency, it was decided to postpone the meetings that were contemplated in both countries.

The Forum presents the opportunity to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, which constitutes the most comprehensive roadmap to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the coming years, in compliance with the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.

Three objectives are pursued through the Forum process: the first involves the creation of a shared roadmap for progress toward gender equality by revitalizing the efforts of feminist groups since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration; together, through inclusive dialogue and collaboration, a compelling and strengthened movement for gender equality will be fostered; the second refers to the launching of the Action Coalitions that are based on the principle of solidarity between States, civil society, international organizations and the private sector; finally, Mexico has proposed to establish a Group of Friends for Gender Equality, with the objective of creating an informal network that supports international initiatives related to the advancement of gender equality.

The Forum is also part of the feminist foreign policy of the Mexican government, as well as its commitment to gender equality, 25 years after the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action.

In order to safeguard the health of the attendees and encourage broad and diverse participation, the format of the Forum will take into account the health situation that prevails on those dates.

The Government of Mexico reiterates its commitment to the rights of women and girls; in particular, given the impact that the global pandemic by COVID19 has had on the lives of millions of women and girls, which makes the objectives of the Forum more relevant than ever and with which it is planned to give a renewed impetus to the agenda for gender equality.
