What is the link between the Beijing Platform for Action and the GEF?
The year 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most comprehensive global agenda to achieve the empowerment of women and girls in all aspects of life, as well as the achievement of gender equality. Twenty-five years after its adoption, public rhetoric on gender equality has not been matched by action and implementation. While there has been important progress, real change has been slow and, so far, no country has achieved gender equality. Today, the world faces an unprecedented set of challenges that threaten the advancement of girls’ and women’s rights, including the rising gender inequality caused by COVID-19.
The Generation Equality Forum aims to confront and respond to the gender equality crisis by spurring financial and political commitments for gender equality and taking ambitious steps towards the full implementation of the critical Beijing+25 framework.
How does the COVID-19 health emergency affect the GEF?
The Generation Equality Forum, like any international event, has suffered changes due to the Covid-19 health emergency. The date for the Forum in Paris is now set for 31 to 2 of July 2021 and all activities will be held on an online platform to mitigate any health risks.
