Who participates in the Generation Equality Forum?

The Generation Equality Forum will be a global public conversation for urgent action and accountability for gender equality, celebrating the power of women’s rights activism, feminist solidarity, and youth leadership to achieve transformational change.

 

By aiming to reaffirm the value of multilateralism through the empowerment of feminist movements, putting social movements at the center of the global community, this event will bring together the leadership and participation of various stakeholders: civil society, academia, collectives, governments, businesses, cities, parliaments, trade unions, media and more, focusing on intergenerational civil society and multi-stakeholder partnerships for gender equality.

How can I participate?

The Generation Equality Forum will be held in Mexico City, and later in Paris, on dates yet to be confirmed.

 

Due to the health emergency triggered by Covid-19, the Forum will have a limited number of attendees ––yet to be defined.

 

To ensure greater participation, the Generation Equality Forum will have live transmissions of the main working sessions, which will be announced on social networks and on this website.

 

Guidelines for face-to-face and remote participation will be released soon.

Does participating in the Generation Equality Forum in Mexico guarantee my participation in France?

In the event that participation in person for the Generation Equality Forum in Mexico is confirmed, your participation in the Generation Equality Forum in France will neither be guaranteed nor restricted.

Is there a cost to participate in the Generation Equality Forum?

Both on-site and remote participation in the Generation Equality Forum is totally free, however on-site attendance at the event will be subject to confirmation by the organizing team due to Covid-19 restrictions.

What is the link between the Beijing Platform for Action and the Generation Equality Forum?

The year 2020 marks several milestones, including the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most comprehensive global agenda to achieve the empowerment of women and girls in all aspects of life, as well as the achievement of gender equality.

 

While there has been important progress, real change has been slow and, so far, no country has achieved gender equality. Today, the world faces an unprecedented set of challenges that threaten the advancement of girls’ and women’s rights.

 

The Generation Equality Forum is a global meeting held at the initiative of civil society for gender equality and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action. Convened by UN Women and co-chaired by the governments of Mexico and France with the leadership of civil society, this forum will bring together key stakeholders, especially young people, to design feminist strategies to respond to today’s global challenges. The Generation Equality Forum will also present a set of Action Coalitions, which will generate tangible and transformative results for gender equality during the United Nations Decade of Action (2020-2030) with the aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

What is the link between the Generation Equality Forum and the Action Coalitions?

Action Coalitions, one of the outcomes of the Forum, are innovative, multi-stakeholder global partnerships involving governments, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector with the following objectives

 

Promote collective actions

Foster global intergenerational conversation;

Promote greater public and private investment;

Achieve concrete and transformative intergenerational outcomes for the benefit of girls and women.

 

Based on human rights principles and through a consultative process and drawing on statistical information and the participation of international feminist groups, grassroots activist organizations, governments and other stakeholders, the themes chosen for the Generation Equality Action Coalitions are

 

1.- Gender violence

2.- Justice and economic rights

3.- Autonomy over the body, sexual and reproductive health and rights

4.- Feminist action for climate justice

5.- Technology and innovation for gender equality

6.- Feminist movements and leadership

How does the Covid-19 health emergency affect the Generation Equality Forum?

The Generation Equality Forum, like any international event, has suffered changes due to the Covid-19 health emergency. The dates have been postponed and the capacity of participants has been adjusted to guarantee full security of participants. For this reason, the activities will also have an online support, to guarantee the remote participation of those who cannot attend.

When and where will the Generation Equality Forum take place?

The Generation Equality Forum is based in Mexico City, Mexico and in Paris, France. Due to the Covid-19 health emergency, dates are being evaluated in order to guarantee full participation with safety conditions for attendees.

What measures are contemplated to ensure the safety of participants before Covid-19?

In order to guarantee the safety of those who attend the Generation Equality Forum in person, the logistics of the event include cleaning, hygiene, and access control measures, as well as distance between places reserved for attendees.
