The Generation Equality Forum is a global movement for urgent action and accountability for gender equality, which commenced in Mexico City (Mexico) from 29 to 31 March 2021 and culminated in Paris (France) from 30 June to 2 July 2021. The Forum promotes systemic and transformative change that accelerates the implementation of the historic Beijing Platform for Action and leads to gender equality, resilience, and sustainability in a world affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
With civil society and youth representation at its core, the Forum in Mexico City was a moment to reinforce the power and voice of feminism, youth, and civil society as well as renewing action towards the full and accelerated implementation of towards the full and accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The GEF aimed to:
-Ensure a multistakeholder and human rights approach.
-Promote balanced intergenerational and intersectional representation.
-Highlight the impact of COVID-19 on women's rights.
-Strengthen the women's movement and civil society activism.
-Promote high-level political commitment and action.
Overall, the Forum reinforced the power and voice of feminist and youth movements, kicking off the drive towards bold commitments to be announced in Paris. As a critical moment for urgent change, it addressed urgent matters to achieve gender equality, propelled by the COVID-19 global crisis and reinforced the idea that gender equality must be central to every recovery plan. The Forum highlighted the need for the Generation Equality agenda, and launched a Global Acceleration Plan that provides a feminist road map to deliver concrete progress on gender equality across generations for girls and women.
In March 2019, UN Women together with the governments of Mexico and France announced the Generation Equality Forum to take place in both countries. The Forum would be a collective mobilization moment with civil society at its core, to galvanize all stakeholders to a roadmap for accelerated action on gender equality commitments that remove the most egregious barriers to gender equality and women's rights.
The Forum secured a total of 18,488 connections from all the world, with 50% of those participants being 34 years old or younger.
